The Software Development Renaissance

I shared this earlier this month with the company.

Gitpodders, happy new year and welcome back. Hope you spent time with your loved ones and recharged. I reflected much during hibernation and would like to share a few thoughts.

I am deeply grateful to each of you for making 2024 our most significant year yet. In ten years, I believe we will look back and see that success became inevitable in 2024. It was not about quadrupling enterprise revenue, closing several seven-figure contracts, or launching Flex. That is simply a function of something more foundational: we discovered our authentic rhythm in 2024.

To celebrate this, we renamed Operating Values to Operating Principles, because this is what they are: a manifestation of principles that unite all of us to make grounded, high-quality decisions in uncharted territory. And oh boy, we will need to make a lot of decisions in the years to come.

As we grow, it is on all of us to nurture and invest in a thriving company culture, one we choose to be part of. I believe we have everything we need to make that our reality.

Another reason I know success is inevitable is that, as a team, we have learned to embrace change. Over the past two years, we have developed resilience in setbacks, connected with each other, listened, leaned into difficult conversations, flattened hierarchies, and raised the bar.

We share a calm understanding that everything always changes, and change comes faster when we stretch beyond our comfort zones, face the truth, and open the drawer with our customers, each other, and ourselves.

At the same time, and this is a counterintuitive lesson to remember in 2025 and 2026: even if things are uncomfortable and overwhelming, it is not just more pleasant, but more effective, when we surrender and enjoy it.

Ask anyone who does a cold plunge what happens once they stop fighting the cold. Nah, it is not influenza. Instead, you expand your capacity, feel more alive, and learn faster. This is what we mean by asking what is wunderbar: not feeling oppressed by your circumstances, but choosing to shift perspectives and being empowered.

In 2025, whether you solve a tough problem or get stuck with a small one, whether you feel excited, overwhelmed, or frustrated, or face a conflict with a colleague or customer, keep using our operating principles as your compass.

Each of us, and those around us, will need clear-eyed principles to thrive in the coming wave, which will be more powerful and disruptive than anything we have seen in our lifetime. And the first use case to be disrupted is software development.

Welcome to the Renaissance

In the next 18 months, AI agents will transform software development beyond simple in-editor autocomplete into sophisticated, context-aware systems working on tasks end to end. Development teams will automate 80% of routine tasks, allowing engineers to focus on strategic and creative work.

Intelligence and reasoning improvements in foundation models drive this transformation, not deterministic scaffolding. Building a state-of-the-art PR review agent internally took us one day.

As models rapidly improve in early 2025, the bottleneck of wide scale enterprise adoption for agents shifts from model intelligence to packaging and infrastructure. Building end-to-end platforms for the enterprise, not wrapping models, presents the true engineering challenge leading to defensibility.

The winning company will reimagine the interaction between software creators and agents outside of the IDE, forward deploy secure systems within enterprise VPCs, orchestrate standardized API-first environments at the operating system level, integrate with existing development infrastructure, and provide enterprise-grade oversight.

These systems authenticate seamlessly with source control, registries, secret managers, and editors while enforcing security and compliance guardrails. Gitpod has spent the past years building out the foundational primitives for this.

For trusted agents to join the workforce, enterprises must first prepare and standardize their development environment infrastructure. We are structurally positioned to win this race and become the enterprise developer platform for human and AI engineers in software development.

From rethinking the product architecture with security and quality as primary features, leaving Kubernetes, to embracing enterprise sales, everything we have done has led us to this moment. The stars are aligned. Now it is our job to seize the opportunity and build a future where every company can move at the speed of thought.

Before hibernation, you got a first glimpse of what that means through the SONIC architecture and our Q1 roadmap.

I have drawn inspiration for my personal 2025 theme from Sam Harris's New Year's message: live 2025 as though 2030 were my last year. I am healthy and plan to maximize my lifespan, but asking myself "Would I do this, care about this, or pay attention to this if 2030 were my last year?" helps me stay present and fully alive in everything I do. If nothing else, it helped me writing this text.

I love building this company with you, I really do. I know that for many of you, Gitpod is your life's work as well. Let us show the world what we can do, and become a positive force for change rather than its target.

I look forward to running, and winning, this race with you in the years ahead. It will definitely be wild, and we will have plenty of fun.

As the lead of one of the frontier lab's "autonomous engineer" efforts told me last week: "I believe the value of what you are building will grow exponentially. For developers, they can still work without it. For agents, it is existential. You cannot run agents without a system like the one you are building."

To 2025 and beyond. Buckle up. It will go even faster.
